Timekeeper and agenda were used at this meeting. Other methods may be used to expand effectiveness of our time together. Council Update- Ann Maguire will be our new Council Rep. A big thank you to Moira Laughlin who has filled this position for the past two years. New Parent Mentor Operating Guidelines were distributed. This will divide travel time for all. Proposed meeting dates: December 4th, February 12th in Lakota, and Tuesday, April 8th. Updated contact sheet was passed around for corrections and later distribution to members. It will take about a year for federal regs. to be adopted. Then there will be a “critical time” for input regarding the development of our own state regs. Historically, Ohio has gone beyond the federal regulations with services. For now, we will continue to use the “Operating Standards” with the exception of the change from 90 days to 60 days for evaluations as federal law supersedes state law. ii. State funding will be an issue for the Parent Mentor program. Funding is okay until June of ’06, but looks very uncertain after that. The FAST program incorporates a paid part time Parent Advocate for families, but little more is known about the program other that it is a state mental health initiative. ii. A working potluck lunch will be held on February 25th at 11:00 at Julie Gundy’s home to assemble folders and work on conference details.

She reported that 88 people were involved the Spring Institute and that
700-800 were to convene in Columbus to continue the mission of implementing the
Governor’s vision for a more competitive education system in Ohio.
PLAN FOR NEXT YEAR: We discussed any
regional events that we might like to coordinate for next year.
Travel was an issue for most of us.
We also talked about any inspiring speakers that could present at the
Parent Mentor Fall conference. Dave
Leedy was a speaker suggested.
We planned our schedule for Regional meetings and chose a topic for the regional
training for one of those meetings.
September – Gail Love, Coventry Parent Mentor will host the 3rd
Thursday in September to be held at the Rotary Camp.
November 12th – our scheduled PAC meeting at SST8 will be our
training meeting with plans to have Dr. Depolo as our speaker.
Diane Rudzitis, Hudson’s Parent Mentor will be an alternate host if PAC
not available.
February 19th – Sandie Cooper and Amy Dell’Anno, Brunswick Parent
Mentors, will host at the Brunswick City Library.
April 16th – hosted by Stow Parent Mentors.
Project Updates: Southeast Local
Schools Parent Mentor, Sandy Craft,
announced that they hosted their annual skating party and 126 people were in
attendance. April 23rd
they will be having the Boomerang Man come and demonstrate how to use a
boomerang and participants will receive a boomerang to take home.
Field Local School’s will also being hosting the Boomerang Man on April
25th and both districts will receive a discount.
The benefit of using a boomerang is that it returns to the person
throwing it. This will be great for
all students with disabilities.
Canton City Parent Mentor: The
district is rewriting the job description for their grant and will finally be
hiring a full-time person with benefits provided.
Becky Milsap will be resigning and they are currently looking for a new
person that lives within the school district. They are hoping to have someone by
June.
Stow-Monroe Falls City Schools – Barb Greenwald reported that they recently had
a presentation by Melody Tankersley on ADHD and reported a good turn out.
Karen Majesky, from SST-8 will be discussing IEP’s on April 29th.
Hudson City Schools – Dianne Rudzitis reported having Susan Tucker talk about
Bullying for her parents. Dianne is
having Jay Berk, Ph.D. on June 3rd.
He will be speaking to parents of students in the younger grades about
including all family during the summer months.
Coventry Local Schools – Gail Love is having OCECD
representative, Karen Lyke talk about IEP’s for her parents on May 1st
from 6:00-8:30. Gail offered
information on a college living experience she came across on the internet.
Chicago is the closest to us that offers such an experience but it does
cost $30,000. She says to find out
more just to google “college living experience”.
Brunswick City Schools – Brunswick Parent Mentors, Sandie Cooper and Amy
Dell’Anno will be hosting a night with Jay Berk, Ph.D.
on May 20th at 7:00 p.m.
The topic will be “Social Skill Success” – Strategies to help with
students with social deficits. He
will also go over bullying issues.
They also offered to forward information on a cd-rom program they
purchased for their lending library titled “Social Skills – used in the
community”,
Woodridge Local and Kent City Schools – Susan Foley offered information
regarding funding source – she reported that you can apply to the Summit and
Portage County ARC for funds.
Green Local Schools – Tami Vandygriff and Melissa Jarvis had a speaker talk
about Bullying Issues and will be hosting a Transition Meeting tonight.

given to each member of the region.
Thank you Melissa and Tami!!!
Barb Greenwald introduced
the new mentor hired in Stow. Barb’s
new partner is Leslie White. Welcome
Leslie, and great job on the names!
Cathy Douglas (council
rep.) gave the Parent Mentor Council update. Fall
Conference was discussed. Gary Tonks
is confirmed as our key note speaker and short break outs will be held since
they were so well received last fall.
Fall conference will be held in conjunction with Partnering for
Progress on 10/20 and 21, 2008 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Columbus.
Mary Mertic has been
hired as a Parent Mentor with TANF grant funds by the Tri-County ESC.
A new mentor was also hired in Portage County with the TANF funds.
But, that mentor is not able to cover all of the county.
Since Gabrielle Spangler is no longer with OCECD the question was asked
who would be the person assigned to Portage.
Cathy Douglas will contact Barb Rice and pass that information to the
region.
Amy Dell’Anno has been
asked by Francis Strickland to sit on the Governors Education Committee.
She will be attending a meeting in Columbus next week.
We look forward to hearing updates from Amy about Mr. Strickland’s vision
for education in Ohio. Go Amy!!!

held April 17th in Nordonia.
Mid-East Regional Parent Mentors Regional Meeting
Not in Attendance: Sandy
Cooper, Barb Greenwald, Deb Bates, and Mary Mertic
The regional meeting was
held at State Support Team Region 8 in Cuyahoga Falls.
Training began at 9:30 and was presented by Marilyn Swartz, SST Region 8
consultant. The topic: Co-Teaching
and Inclusion. Parent Mentors met
for one hour following the training beginning at 12:00.
Cathy Douglas (council
rep.) gave the Parent Mentor Council update.
Spring conference was discussed.
It was mentioned that overnight accommodations (on our own) could be
found in Delaware or Marion. Mentors
were informed of council’s decision to hold fall conference in conjunction with
Partnering for Progress on 10/20 and 21, 2008 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in
Columbus.
The Parent Mentor
Training Survey results were discussed.
As we looked over the top 10 subjects, all in attendance were in
agreement that offering a “basic class” and an “advanced class” in these
subjects would be very beneficial for new and seasoned mentors both. (For
example: Behavior planning/BIP’s/FBA/PBIS – a basic presentation would explain
these issues for new mentors – an advanced presentation would give seasoned
mentors actual strategies to implement these plans).
Also, it was suggested that longer “Question and Answer” times should be
allowed for all subjects. Some of
our best ideas/knowledge come from asking about specific scenarios and hearing
other mentors experiences answered by the experts.
As a region our #1 choice for Fall conference would be Legal Updates
presented by Anne Quinan, with a lengthy Q&A session at the end.
Also, Gary Tonks –Executive Director of The Arc of Ohio would be an ideal
speaker. Gary can speak about many
issues of interest to Parent Mentors.
It should be noted that
Power Sessions were very well received.
This format allowed enough time for each subject.
The general feeling was that 3 hours is too long for any one subject.
New Parent Mentor
Projects funded by TANIF funds were discussed.
Questions were raised as to how many districts would be interested in
1-year grants with such restrictions and how the projects would document the
financial standing of each family served.
Will the TANIF restrictions still apply to the project once the original
grant money is spent and the district is funding the project on its own?
The general feeling was this is a good way for interested districts to
start a Parent Mentor Project, but they will need to have a commitment of
continued funding from other sources.
Because of time
restraints each district checked in briefly with any comments or concerns and
the meeting was adjourned at 1:00.
Our next regional meeting
is scheduled for February 21, 2008 in Green.
MIDEAST PARENT MENTOR
REGIONAL MEETING MINUTES
The MIDEAST Parent
Mentors held their first regional meeting for the 2007/2008 school year at
Hattie’s Café in Hudson. Jeanne

Hattie’s Café is run by Hattie Larham and employs adults with
disabilities.
